A Poem

My kid went away to college today
On the way up I guess there wasn't a lot to say
He'd lived at home since he was too young to walk
All the way to Buffalo there wasn't much talk

All those years together seemed to go so fast
Yet that road trip up seemed to last and last
As we dropped him off, and he waved goodbye
I glanced at my wife to see if she''d cry

That first night home, the house seemed so large
She looked at me as though I were in charge
What could I do, he was gone to hone his skills
Yet the stares I got liked to give me the chills

He phoned home to say that he was happy you see
But Mom & Mother-in law thought at home he should be
Under the table the dog chose to go for that night
For with feelings that low it was best to keep out of sight

If only we could see he was happy and content
The education he was getting would more than pay the rent
If only he could share his feelings with the family back at home
Mom, Dad, Mother-in Law (Dog) wouldn't feel so alone

Things will work out as we've all been told
To have one to love isn't necessarily to hold
For each and everybody gets to one day live happily ever after
It's the parts in between that seen to have little laughter
